A long-running nasi lemak shop in Kampung Baru, right in the middle of Kuala Lumpur. It opens early and closes late, so it works for breakfast or a late-night bite.

The first thing that surprised me was the rice. Cooked in coconut milk, it had more aroma and flavour than any nasi lemak I've eaten. The sambal is on the sweet side, with a mild heat, and goes beautifully with the rice. For a side, I recommend the paru goreng, fried beef lung. It's crisp and fragrant outside and well seasoned with spices, and it kept me going back for more rice.

The story begins in 1963, when the current owner's grandmother opened a roadside stall under the name Mak Wanjo. The cooking still follows the old ways, the dining hall is bigger now, and it's always busy with locals and visitors alike.
